Applicants for British Citizenship, Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), or Settlement (Permanent Residency) in the UK must pass a Secure English Language Test (SELT) at CEFR level B1 in Speaking and Listening. The GESE Grade 5 test from Trinity College London is an accepted qualification for demonstrating English language proficiency.
Purpose of the Test
The B1 SELT test assesses speaking and listening abilities to ensure that candidates can communicate effectively in English. This requirement applies to applications for:
- Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) – granting the right to reside in the UK without time limits.
- Settlement / Permanent Residency – allowing long-term residency in the UK.
- British Citizenship (Naturalisation) – enabling access to full citizenship rights.
